Ask yourself, and yourself alone, one question … Does this path have a Heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t it is of no use. ―Carlos Castaneda, from the book The Teachings of Don Juan
I assume you’re unfamiliar with the term “Starwatcher.” Most people when they hear this word think either I work for a supermarket tabloid spending my days talking to or photographing celebrities; others think I’m up all night, starring into the small end of a telescope studying the night sky … an astronomer. Actually since I live in Los Angeles it would be pretty normal for me to be doing either of these things. And in the past I have spent time doing both, but neither describes who I am and the path I’m on. To keep things simple I been telling my clients of the last thirty years “I’m an Astrologer,” and the magazine I worked for ten years gave me the title “Astrological editor”; but since this is a confession of sorts, and I feel the need to be honest, I’ll tell you the truth, “I’m a Starwatcher.”
I didn’t choose to be a Starwatcher, nor did someone tell me that’s who I am; rather it’s something I realized in a brief moment of self-reflection, it was an inadvertent epiphany discovered quite by accident. I tell you this with a great deal of reluctance for I’m putting my sanity on the line. Why, as an astrologer, couldn’t I just decide to continue accepting the input of certain information, carry it around and then dispense it at the appropriate times? Well, because my Heart felt this message so deeply I had to accept it as my truth: “You have to know your story, your mythos … You’re a Starwatcher, who’s following, participating in, and learning from, the Sun’s journey through the starry heavens. Your path is the same as the Sun’s …it’s the Zodiac. You have to know this mythos … you have to start living it, and see where it leads. As difficult as it may be, you have to let who you are shine forth.”
We are stardust, We are golden, And we’ve got to get ourselves, Back to the garden. ―Joni Mitchell, from the song Woodstock
